DS1 Double Van Seat Swivel Hack

Want more space in your camper van or motorhome?

🔄 The quickest method to create extra living space is by rotating your front seats... and the good news is: Rotating the driver’s seat is usually quick and easy.

⚠️ But many people get stuck with the double passenger seat.

This is because...

  • Swivel bases are not always available

  • When available, they can be expensive

  • Some may not meet safety rules

  • They can raise the seat too high

  • They can be hard to turn

The simple solution is to slide the seat back into free space, then rotate it smoothly.

Our guide will show you the easiest way to do this without costly mistakes, ensuring it is safe and compliant.

No complex tools. No expensive parts.

Easy to follow. Easy to do with better and safer results.

By following this guide, the final result will be safe, meet local regulations, and rotate smoothly.

🚦 Space Requirements

For easy rotation, the seat must slide back into an open space. In most vans this is simple because the side door provides enough room.

If anything is behind the seat, check the space:

  1. Measure the width of the seat.

  2. Measure the distance from the dashboard to the object behind the seat.

  3. The difference between these two measurements is the space available for rotation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes! The guide is universal. There are only two constraints:

  1. Having enough space behind the seat: Which there generally is given the side door access. If you have an obstruction then you don't have to rotate the seat all in one go. i.e. twist it until it contacts the obstruction then slide it back forward to continue to do the rest of the turn. Measure the width of your seat and then compare that to the distance from your dashboard to the obstruction behind the seat. The difference is what you have to play with.
  2. Your skill set: But given you are probably converting your van to a camper and these are produced for anyone with basic DIY skills you should be ok.

No. The guide is generic, as the technique is always the same from vehicle to vehicle.

Yes. The guide covers this.

Yes. This is covered in the guide, but you may gain height. Eg. from a level line if you have 15mm slope below the conversion will double that to 30mm in height.

This will always vary. However, you are not paying the labour cost of a built item. Nor the shipping cost. Therefore it will always be cheaper. In addition, you are in control of what materials you choose to buy and where you buy them from.

If you don't feel you could complete the project yourself you could ask a DIY friend to build a project for you. This is still ok under the single use personal licence. Just make sure you give us their email address when you purchase.

Yes! We can offer you a printable voucher that you can present as a gift to someone. Just contact us through our contact page and tell us which project you would like as a Gift Voucher.

If you would like to commercially build and resell this product you will need a valid commercial license to comply with our copyright and prevent prosecution. Information regarding a commercial license is at the end of each project design document.

No. This is a single use license. You cannot SHARE or DOWNLOAD. This helps us protect against fraud. If you are buying a project for someone else to build for you, it's advisable that you use their email address when purchasing the project. They will then receive the access to the document instead of you.

No. You cannot PRINT. There are links to video demonstrations and links to parts required. These links simply won't work on a paper copy. This is best viewed on a mobile phone or tablet.

I can't give too much away, but I can tell you that whenever the seat is forward facing it is anchored back down using the original tensile bolts to the original reinforced floor mounting points. Subsequently (in our belief) still compliant around the world as it is still original when in travel.

If a double swivel is available off the shelf for your vehicle it will anchor using T latches. These are the only links preventing the seat and occupants from being torn out in a collision. Our method uses the original tested and certified anchor bolts to the reinforced mountings in your van floor. So I ask you this: Which would you rather rely on? The certified and tested parts or a T latch made by Bob?

Releasing the anchor bolts is best done with a cordless drill and socket. Using that method your seat will effortlessly rotate in around 1-2 minutes.
